IconDial is a service which has was launched a few months ago, is now back online, and should remain so, as we have managed to finally find a way to make it sustainable.
In exchange for listening to a short 10 second advert before the call is made, you can make free calls to any land-line or mobile phone in USA.
IconDial will soon be expanding to other countries, and will be offering new features, such as voice-mail, address books etc.
It would be cool if there was a place to download the advertisements on the site as well because some of them are bound to sound cool. I doubt companies would think it's bad if we're keeping their advertisements :P.

wish you all best luck! try to add ads like evaphone is doing...

Great idea but don't know why calling Romania always dies after 2 seconds.
Posted by: Scorpiono | September 30, 2008 at 09:43 AM
From the US (using the country code of 1 before the number) is playing the ad, ringing once, and then nothing. silence.
I will try it next without the US country code (being in the US may be the issue)
But, ya, let's be able to download some of these ads by archiving them. There is a spanish ad with a great scream at the end! I want to use that scream for our neighborhood haunted house this Hall!

Ya, OK, it actually works, BUT with both cellphones AND landlines, all the receiver of my calls hears is themselves with echo-back. All flash settings are correct - as Gizmo and Skype and mebeam all work fine (with their usual lags!). So , you will need to turn on your server-side echo cancel. That seems to be the only thing missing from your set-up - the persons I call sound GREAT, they just can't here me. Not at all. Just whatever they say is repeated back to them.

After the ad it's only ringing and nothing's happens, so for me it's not working!!!

I'm trying to call to Spain, but i just get the ad, and it starts to ring without any result...

Could you please post and example of dialing? I don't know for example, to call to US, if my first numbers are: 001, +1, or just 1
Posted by: Not working either | September 30, 2008 at 09:14 PM
It looks like your server has fallen...
Posted by: Citic | October 01, 2008 at 12:21 AM
Server's still up if I use vtunnel.com to access it. Don't know why it doesn't work if we're in the states, but I think it's because a bunch of people are using it and those advertisements on there are placeholders. I think he didn't intend for this many people to use it on day 1 and 2.

Great idea, this icondial,,,,,,IF it only worked. While I understand that it is a Beta stage, let me vent my frustration (calling from Guadalajara in Mexico) :
1)web site rarely opens
2)web site opens VERY slowly
3)when I make the call, YES I hear the ad BOT NO connection OR it rings and rings and I have to shut down the web site
I hope these "bugs" are fixed and we call ICONDIAL ............
buena suerte,
