A few months ago I wrote about XMPP the technology that drives jabber based instant messengers such as Adium and Google Talk, and even technologies such as Twitter.
After months of planning, MeBeam, along with Google etc, is now part of the XMPP Federation, so you can be sure that your mebeam.com username is portable and will work everywhere.
Although your mebeam.com username can be used with any instant messenger, my personal favorite is Coccinella.

I second that; being an admin for
semi-large corporate, that has been
using xmpp for a while, i registered
a mebeam username, and tried it within
our company -
(a) fully portable :)
(b) so very very fast !
